Mono Lake, according to Mark Twain, was a "lifeless, treeless, hideous desert... the loneliest place on earth." For more than a century Mono Lake was undervalued- its starkness masked its complex ecosytems- until it was nearly at risk of drying up. Today, it serves as an example of beauty in bareness.
